Lisa and Lea Cohn’s Bash and Lucy Books journey began in 2013, when their family’s dog, Lucy, died suddenly at the age of 6. To help overcome her grief, Lisa decided to write a children’s book that starred Lucy. She began writing Bash and Lucy Fetch Confidence, and then her book-loving daughter, Lea, age five at the time, offered to help.
They asked a local artist, Heather Nichols, to illustrate their book, and were thrilled when she said yes.
Lea woke up one morning and told her mom, “I really want people to read our book.” To help get the word out about the book, Lea decided to do video reviews of dog books on YouTube, and soon enough, authors from all over the U.S. started sending Lea their books for review. That landed Lea and Lisa on the Today Show, AM Northwest, KATU-TV and in the Oregonian, Disney’s Babble and other media.
The Cohns began teaching kids–via Skype in the classroom–about how they wrote, published and marketed their books, and before Skype in the classroom shut down, they had visited children in 15 counrries, sometimes doing two or three visits a week.
The Cohns wrote three more Bash and Lucy books and produced four audiobooks, using their own voices and those of their family members, dog and friends. Lea helped create the illustrations for the third book and created the concept for the design of the fourth book’s cover.
Along the way, the mother-daughter team received two Mom’s Choice awards.

During their Bash and Lucy Books journey, Lisa and Lea have raised hundreds of dollars for the Oregon Humane Society and the Ukrainian Foundation.
